NMML ‘Academic Research, Translation and Book Writing Fellowship’

The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is pleased to announce a Fellowship scheme for publishing book, based on original research which focuses on valuable records and sources of historical importance and contemporary social science issues. Broadly the fellowship will cover the economic, political, and cultural aspects of modern India. Fellows are expected to publish an original book through a reputed publishing house. The detailed information on this scheme is as follows:

Objective:

The aim of this fellowship is to promote research and publishing on modern and contemporary India. In particular, our objective is to encourage the translation, editing and publication of valuable historical materials and documents pertaining to India found in foreign languages such as French, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish and Spanish.

Number of Fellowships:

The number of Fellowships in a year is limited to four (4)

Duration and Fellowship Amount:

The Fellowship will be awarded for a maximum period of one year and grant may vary from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 4 lakhs each depending upon the nature of the proposed work. At the time of interview the scholars are expected to produce completed manuscript till date along with a detailed work plan of the Fellowship tenure. During the Fellowship period the progress will be compared and evaluated rigorously vis a vis work submitted at the time of interview. The Fellowships will not cover any contingency amount and will not be extended under any circumstance.

Eligibility

  1. The Fellowship is open only to Indian Citizens.
  2. Excellent academic track record in teaching/research
  3. Published articles and books with reputed publishing house.

 Terms and Conditions

  1. The total grant would be disbursed in 4 installments, not exceeding Rs. 1,00,000/- each per installment. The first installment will be released only after the proposal is approved by the Fellowship Selection Committee. Second and third installments would be released only after successful and satisfactory submission of the quarterly progress report (should contain the draft of new chapter/revised chapter each time of 15000-20000 word length). The last installment would be released only after the successful completion of the full draft of the book/ monograph to the Fellowship Review Committee and its approval by it.
  2. Once awarded, the same applicant will not be eligible to apply for the same grant again.
  3. Awardees must follow the rules and regulations of this grant, embark on research after receiving the award notification of the grant, and submit their book/monograph within the stipulated time of 12 months, failing which the NMML has the right to impose penalties upon them and ask them to return the whole grant amount as per the government rules.
  4. If the grant committee does not find suitable candidates, the grant will not be awarded in that year.
  5. The minimum length of the book excluding acknowledgement, contents, footnotes, bibliography, index, and annexure should be between 65,000-70,000 words. 
  6. The decision of the Fellowship Selection Committee and Executive Council of NMML will be final and unalterable.
  7. The copyright of the awardees’ published manuscripts will rest with the author. 
  8. Selected fellows are required to deliver a public lecture on the subject of their research at NMML during their fellowship tenure.

 Guidelines for submission of proposals

  1. Interested scholars are required to send a 2000 words write-up of their manuscript along with a cover letter and a CV (should contain name, address, current designation, nationality, date of birth, gender, and names of at least two referees). Members of the Selection Committee, NMML Society, Executive Council, and staff cannot be a referee. The application should be mailed to: artbwfellow-nmml@gov.in on or before 14 July 2018.
  2. Incomplete applications and applications received after the last date will not be considered.
